MIDAS is a collaborative effort between the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) and CryptoBLK that harnesses Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) or blockchain to ensure the authentication of motor insurance documents and fight against fraudulent cases. In 2020, MIDAS won the Gold Award from Hong Kong ICT Award; and in 2019, it was awarded the Innovation of the Year from Asia Insurance Review in Singapore.

CryptoBLK is thrilled to launch the “Innovate Together” Talk, where we will have an in-depth conversation with industry leaders, who will update us on the challenges and opportunities the industry is facing, and how MIDAS can bring “trust” to the whole industry through the blockchain, and hence solving the industry pain points.

We are honored to have Mr. Eric Hui, Chief Executive Officer of Zurich Insurance (Hong Kong), as our guest in the “Innovate Together” Talk. He will share his views on the digital transformation in Hong Kong’s insurance and the application of blockchain technology,  as well as the value and benefits of MIDAS to law enforcement and public interests.

Q: How do you think about the digital transformation in Hong Kong’s insurance industry?

Eric: The digital transformation in Hong Kong’s insurance industry has been progressing in the right places at the right pace.  In both GI and Life segments, we see plenty of digital applications by insurers and other practitioners in sales and marketing, customer services, claims processes, customer engagement and risk prevention as well.  In terms of distribution model, digital transformation is going on well for both intermediary-based and direct platforms (as evidenced by the joining of a few virtual insurers), fulfilling the different preferences among the insuring public.  There are also plenty of insure-tech start-ups in the ecosystem supporting the digital transformation of the insurance industry.

Q: HKFI is making an effort on digitizing the industry, such as investing blockchain technology to develop industry-wide platform MIDAS. What is your view on it?

Eric: MIDAS is truly a success in terms of digitization at the industry level.  Riding on blockchain technology, the industry can work together for the greater good of the society without breaching the privacy of the customers of individual insurers.  MIDAS is also a model of Public-Private Partnership signifying the extra value creatable by connecting different value owners leveraging blockchain.  Going forward, HKFI will continue to explore more value-creating opportunities for the benefits of member companies and the greater good for the public, e.g. in the area of combating fraud.

Q: Zurich (Hong Kong) is the first few insurance companies adopting Midas since its launch. Is adopting new technology such as blockchain one of your business strategies to keep competitive?

Eric: Zurich (Hong Kong) adopts many new technologies in our operations, just to name a few like Open API, Power Automate, AI Machine Learning and Cloud computing, to keep improving customer experience and engagement, and driving efficiency.

Q: Any challenges in the API process?

Eric: There are always challenges when building something good and new.  One of the key challenges is data definition, data transformation, the exchange format between Midas and insurers with their own legacy systems.  Of course, we also have to ascertain the protection of customer privacy and our business interests.

Q: Do you think the integration of Midas to your system will benefit to your customer?

Eric: With the automated authentication function of MIDAS, our Motor Insurance customers do not need to worry about any extra work to prove the authenticity of their insurance cover notes when challenged.  In the long run, the fraud prevention function of MIDAS will help improve the quality of the Motor insurance portfolio and in return better rationalize the pricing in favour of customers.
